Art Statement by Neil Berger:
I wander and find quiet, out-of-the-way places. I marvel at the extravagance of sunlight. A message of inspiration said ‘Split a piece of wood and you will find Me there’. Just so I round any corner and find Sun there.
I make scenes emphasizing light as a verb, and my subject is not any one thing but the web of relations between everything- an ecological seeing that is the essence of landscape. People are seen as from far away, rapt in themselves and unaware of the larger cosmic drama, like the picture of Icarus crashing into the sea as a ploughman ploughs. My guiding mood is melancholy- a soulful sadness quickened with an inner fluttering. And my eternal challenge is getting the glorious facts while supervising the whole operation with shrewd stagecraft.
