Mission & History

ISE Cultural Foundation in New York was established in 1984 as a 501c-3 non-profit organization to support mostly emerging, under-represented artists and curators by providing the opportunities of exhibition at the gallery which was located in 555 Broadway, SOHO, New York City.

Early on ISE Cultural Foundation in New York (ISE NY) held various projects such as “Asia Art Series” which introduced the artists from many Asian countries to the US audience to help the cultural exchange.

Since 2002 ISE NY had focused on the project, “Program for Emerging Curators” (PEC), which gives emerging curators an opportunity to organize their exhibition in our gallery space, approximately 2,000 sq. feet, in SOHO, NY. PEC is an open call program for curators from all over the world. For 13 years ISE NY had hosted numerous PEC exhibitions successfully and supported many curators to create their innovative exhibitions in early stage on their career.

Other open call programs ISE NY provided are “Art Student Exhibition” and “ISE NY Art Search”. These programs offer for emerging artists to exhibit their artworks in NYC, the center of the art world.  The Art Student Exhibition was held from 2005 until 2012 and the ISE NY Art Search was held in 2013. Each year ISE NY invited the celebrated art professionals as jurors, such as, curators and directors from museums and galleries, art critics, who awarded selected artworks at the Award Ceremony.

ISE Cultural Foundation has also given to the public special events such as artist talks and lectures by highly established artists such as Alex Katz, Mariko Mori, Jack Pierson, and Ushio Shinohara for public.

Our consistent effort to provide experimental and alternative venue for curators and artists has been recognized on many great reviews over the years, such as, New York Times, New Yorker, Art in America, TimeOut NY, Village VOICE among others.

In January 2015 ISE Cultural Foundation NY moved to new address, 315 West 33rd Street, New York, NY. In this new location, ISE NY shifted their main activities from gallery operation to new grant issuing program to continuously support artists and art communities all over the world.

In May 2015 ISE Cultural Foundation NY was awarded “Consul General’s Commendation” from Ambassador Reiichiro TAKAHASHI, the Consulate General of Japan in New York.
